Glossary
The following is a glossary of terminology that industry professionals
may find helpful:
- Admin Contact
The Administrative contact for a Domain Name.
- A Record (Address Record)
A website address.
- Billing Contact
The billing contact for a Domain Name. We suggest
that this person uses a generic email address.
- Cname
Canonical name, used for pointing purposes; it is
an alias of another address.
- ccTLD
Country-code Top-Level Domain (e.g. .fr - France,
.at - Austria).
- Class C Network
This refers to the third set of numbers for a server,
i.e. DNS31.csccorporatedomains.com = 69.25.142.3
= the Class C Network.
- Cybersquatting
Abusive registration of a Domain Name by a third
party.
- DNS
Domain Name System.
- Domain Name
A script based on ASCII characters that corresponds
to the numerical IP address, e.g. www.csccorporatedomains.com
= 69.25.142.3.
- Domain Name Modification
A change in the Domain Name's details - this can
be more complicated than registration.
- Domain Name Reclaim
The process of 'buying-back' a domain name from a
third party.
- Domain Name Server
The actual computer on which a Domain Name is hosted.
- ENUM
Electronic Numbering- telecoms innovation which aims
to provide a single contact number for fax, cell
phone, landline and email services.
- ERDRP
Eligibility Requirements Dispute Resolution Policy.
Arbitration clause to resolve Domain Name disputes
under the gTLD name.
- Forwarding (email)
Setting up a Domain Name with active email.
- Forwarding (web)
Setting up a Domain Name to link to a website under
another Domain Name.
- gTLD
Generic Top-Level Domain e.g. .com, .net, .org
- IANA
Internet Assigned Numbers Authority - the organization
which allocates country code suffixes to countries.
- ICANN
Internet Corporation for Assigned Names
and Numbers.
- IDNs
(Internationalized Domain Name); Domain names in
non-ASCII characters.
- IP Number
Numerical IP (Internet Protocol) address used by
computers to locate Domain Names, e.g. www.csccorporatedomains.com
= 69.25.142.3
- LDRP
Local Domain Name Resolution Policy based on the
UDRP adopted by ccTLD registries.
- MX Record
A record of a Domain Name's mail servers.
- Name Server
The servers for a Domain Name. There must be two,
but there may be as many as six.
- NIC
Network Information Centre e.g. Nominet UK runs the
.uk extensions.
- Propagation
This is where change/registration is sent out across
the Internet. It normally takes between 24-72 hours
for the change/registration to propagate, i.e.
be visible across the whole Internet.
- Registrant
The individual organization making the registration.
- Registrar
An organization authorized by a Registry (see below)
to submit requests for Domain Name registration
and modification.
- Registry
An organization appointed to manage a Top-Level Domain,
e.g. Nominet manages .uk.
- RNCA
Registrant Name Change Agreement. This is a change
of the ownership document that is signed by the
party giving up the rights of ownership of a Domain
Name to a new party.
- SLD
Second-Level Domain. The second string from the right
e.g. the .co in .co.uk
- Sunrise Challenge Period
Duration in which the Sunrise Registration Challenge
Policy will apply.
- Sunrise Period
Limited period of time where domain registrations
are reserved for holders of prior rights.
- TLD
Top-Level Domain (see ccTLD or gTLD).
- Transfer
Reassignment of ownership of a Domain Name from one
party to another.
- UDRP
Uniform Dispute Resolution Policy - arbitration clause
to resolve Domain Name disputes.
- Whois
System of looking up Domain Name information. Not
all NICs have a Whois facility and it can therefore
be very difficult to obtain accurate registration
dates.
- WIPO
World Intellectual Property Organization - an international
body dedicated to promoting the use and protection
of works of the human intellect.
- Zone Check
A tool that assesses the set-up of a Domain Name
on a specified network of servers.
